The Team
Carbon Ocean Yachts are a team of 23 delivering each project to designer’s drawings and owner’s requirements on time and on budget.
Members of the team have been involved with building high profile racing yachts and cruiser/racers including the Deed of Gift multis, AC version V, Volvo 70s, Open 60s, TP 52s, custom racer/cruisers, custom IRC and entire optimization projects.
The team has experience with a number of well-known designers in the industry including Rogers Yacht Design, BMW Efficient Dynamics, Farr Yacht Design, Reichel-Pugh, Alan Andrews Yacht Design, Botin & Carkeek, Judel/Vrolijk and Mick Price. Structural engineering firms with whom the team has collaborated include High Modulus, SP/Gurit and SDK Structures.
The core of the team consists of David Lake, Britt Colombo, Toby Mueller, Lew Davies, and Mike Danks. Collectively, their skills, accrued through years in the industry, offer a complete building solution with unparalleled quality
Britt Colombo serves as a Managing Partner at Carbon Ocean Yachts, leading the production team and handles financial oversight of company business.
Britt joined Goetz Custom Boats in 2006 and quickly moved to the role of lead builder in the construction and fit out of the decks for several racing yachts. Britt was then promoted to Project Manager for the construction of Highland Fling XI.
Over the course of his career Britt served in a lead builder role in numerous builds including a VO70, multiple TP52’s and optimized IRC Mini-Maxi’s.
In 2005, Britt completed the Landing School Yacht Design Program. Britt began sailing competitively as a child and continued through college, racing on the United States Naval Academy Varsity Sailing Team.
Prior to entering the marine industry Britt worked at two Wall Street firms from 1997 – 2005.
David brings a strong background of project management and industry contacts to Carbon Ocean Yachts.
Since 1995, as David Lake Yachting Projects, David has provided professional project management for yacht construction. His unwavering commitment to owner’s needs of budgetary supervision and superior quality control afford David many contacts within the custom boatbuilding industry, which include owners, designers, engineers and suppliers.
David’s contributions of high customer satisfaction and industry contacts help Carbon Ocean Yachts deliver the best possible product on time and budget.
Toby began boatbuilding as an apprentice at Goetz Custom Sailboats in 2003. After graduating from Brown University he chose to continue boatbuilding and took the role of shift supervisor at Goetz Custom Boats.
As he continued to work for Goetz he also spent time coaching youth racing for various Rhode Island sailing programs. Prior to joining the Carbon Ocean Yachts team, Toby was employed by BMW Oracle for the construction and assembly of the wing mast.
With 7 years of race boat experience and exposure to cutting edge composites construction, Toby is able bring fresh approaches to conventional boat building wisdom.
Mike Danks serves as the lead builder at Carbon Ocean Yachts and brings an extensive resume with experience in both racing and cruising yachts. Mike served his trade apprenticeship in New Zealand and is a qualified master shipwright.
Recently, he served as the Technical Manager for Quantum TP52 Racing for the 2008 Audi Med Cup. Mike has been the Boat Captain for several VO70 teams. Besides VO70’s, Mike has worked with several America’s Cup programs.
Lew heads systems installations and design oversight at Carbon Ocean Yachts. He is responsible for all facets of systems design, installation, operational compliance and systems testing.
Prior to joining Carbon Ocean Yachts, Lew was the instructor of the marine systems program at the International Yacht Restoration School from 2003-2009. Lew has been working in the marine systems field for 16 years.
He is a graduate of the Yacht Design program at the Landing School after he received a B.S. from McGill University.
Carbon Ocean Yachts has a team of 21 boat builders. An average of 11 years industry experience per employee ensures a very high skill set. As such, Carbon Ocean Yachts is fluent in all facets of modern high-end composite construction.
In addition to strong composite construction, Carbon Ocean Yachts offers mechanical, electrical and design plumbing and fit out. Depending on the scope of the project, this is managed, designed and installed in house. In the case of a larger project Carbon Ocean Yachts can suggest suitable sub contractors or work with the client’s choice.
Carbon Ocean Yachts is able to provide super yacht interiors with superlative finish and quality by utilizing local sub contractors.
East Coast Interiors is supplying the interior joiner work of the Carbon 82 to Carbon Ocean Yachts. This collaboration has proven to be most beneficial to the overall build program and super yacht requirements of this project. East Coast Interiors excels at;

James Thompson Marine Carpentry is contracted to Carbon Ocean Yachts to install the joiner work for the Carbon 82 project.
Specializing in yacht interior construction, installation and service, James Thompson Marine Carpentry of Newport RI employs 9 full time craftsmen. Based within the Newport Shipyard and offering carpentry and composite work for some of the world’s finest yachts, JTMC consistently provides the quality and execution demanded by the mega-yacht market.
JTMC has also partnered with the Bristol, RI high-performance yacht builder, Carbon Ocean Yachts. The current project involves installing East Coast Interiors cabinetry in a Carbon 82. This stunning, light weight interior is being meticulously fitted by JTMC craftsmen. JTMC is working with COY in order to provide yacht owners with the best build experience and the highest quality product possible.
